Hiring the wrong electrician can cost you money — or worse, leave you with unsafe work that fails when you sell your home or make an insurance claim. Electrical work isn’t a place to cut corners. Here’s a simple checklist to make sure whoever you hire in Carlow is the real deal.
1. Are they Safe Electric (RECI) registered?
In Ireland, certain electrical work legally must be carried out by a Safe Electric registered electrical contractor, who can issue the proper completion certificate. Ask for their registration number and check it. A registered contractor is accountable to a regulator; an unregistered one isn’t. (We’re Safe Electric registered — No. A4552.)
2. Are they insured?
Any tradesperson working in your home should carry public liability insurance. It’s a fair question to ask, and a professional won’t mind answering it.
3. Will you get a written quote — with no call-out charge to price it?
A trustworthy electrician will look at the job and give you a clear, written, no-obligation quote, and won’t charge you just to come out and price the work. Be wary of vague “we’ll see how it goes” pricing.
4. Do they certify their work?
For rewires, fuse board upgrades, EV chargers and similar work, you should receive a completion certificate. That cert matters for your safety, your insurance, and when you eventually sell. If an electrician can’t certify the work, that’s a red flag.
5. Can you see reviews or references?
Look for genuine reviews — Google, Facebook, or word of mouth from neighbours. A local electrician who’s been around a while will have a track record you can check.
6. Are they actually local?
A local electrician can get to you faster (especially for emergencies), knows the area, and has a reputation in the community to protect. There’s real value in dealing with someone just down the road rather than a faceless call centre.
7. Do you get one point of contact?
For anything beyond a quick repair, it helps to deal with one reliable contractor from the first call to the final certificate — no middlemen, no being passed around, no surprises.
In short
A good electrician is registered, insured, clear on price, certifies their work, and is local and contactable. If someone ticks those boxes, you’re in safe hands.
