If you’ve bought (or are thinking about) an electric car, charging at home is the cheapest and most convenient way to keep it topped up. The good news is there’s a government grant to help with the cost — the SEAI Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant. Here’s how it works in plain English.
Always check the current figure: grant amounts and rules change. At the time of writing the home charger grant is €300. Confirm the latest amount and eligibility on the official SEAI website before you commit — we’ll always check it for you before any work begins.
How much is the grant?
The SEAI home charger grant is currently €300 towards the purchase and installation of a home charge point. It was reduced from €600 at the start of 2024, so don’t be caught out by older articles quoting the higher figure.
Who qualifies?
To be eligible for the grant you’ll generally need:
- Off-street parking at your home (a driveway or designated space — not on-street parking)
- A charger that’s on SEAI’s list of eligible chargers
- Installation by a Safe Electric registered electrician
- For the property to meet SEAI’s eligibility criteria (the scheme has been opened up in recent years to cover more situations, including homeowners who don’t yet own an EV)
You don’t have to already own an electric car to apply — you can get the charger ready in advance.
Why you need a registered installer
This is the part people miss. The grant isn’t just about buying any charger and plugging it in. SEAI requires that:
- The charger is installed by a Safe Electric registered electrical contractor, and
- The electrician completes the work to standard and submits the relevant completion certificate (Cert 3) to Safe Electric.
SEAI then verifies the certificate and the electrician’s registration before releasing payment. In other words: no registered installer, no grant. As a Safe Electric registered contractor, we handle this properly — and we look after the paperwork for you.
How to apply (the simple version)
- Choose your charger and installer. We’ll recommend an eligible charger that suits your car, home and budget.
- Apply to SEAI for the grant (we’ll guide you through this) and wait for your Letter of Offer.
- We install it on a dedicated, protected circuit, safely and tidily, and certify the work.
- Submit the payment request to SEAI with the certificate, test record, photos and invoice. You have a window (currently six months from your Letter of Offer) to complete the install and claim.
We keep this as painless as possible — most of our customers find the grant side far easier than they expected, because we deal with the technical certification.
Is a home charger worth it?
For most EV owners, yes. A proper home charger is faster and safer than charging from a standard socket, cheaper than public charging (especially on a night-rate electricity tariff), and adds a tidy, future-proofed feature to your home.
